SETTINGS:
Crime/Thriller films can take place in a wide variety of locations, however there are certain locations that tend to be commonly used in this genre of film such as abandoned areas, are low populated areas for the idea that it keeps the area mysterious and a sense of danger and loneliness and makes the audience feel that no help can be gained in these types of areas. However sometimes this genre of film can take place in largely populated areas such as large city areas, this is usually because there are wealthy areas in cities such as banks, hotels for getaways for the protagonist or antagonist. Also in large city areas the police, CIA or FBI are located nearby which are key characters in this genre of film especially if a lot of crime is involved. Also when places are heavily populated this can create a mass murder such as terrorist attacks.
This is a short clip from Kiss The Girls a Crime/Thriller showing the abandoned setting.
This is a short clip from Bourne Identity also a Crime/Thriller showing a city setting.
THEMES:
The themes in this genre of film are usually based around, murder, kidnap, ransom, heists and violence. There is usually a time limit theme in these type of films and is based around a clock before something terrible happens to someone. This makes the audience feel more suspense and tension rises as the clock is nearly running out and make them fear what will happen when time does run out. Other themes of Crime/Thriller films is usually the protagonist and antagonist have flashbacks of previous events that may have lead them into the current battle with each other. A lot of themes of this genre of film have plot twists usually near then end of the film. This is a significant key feature to the film as it makes the audience more confused yet it makes them more intrigued in the plot of the film.
This is a short clip from Taken which is made clear on the phone that the CIA agent has 24 hours to get his daughter back or he will lose her forever.
