'Buried' is a film with a storyline and other devices similar to ours. Firstly the plots are very much alike as the film is based around a source on entrapment, in this film it would be the box that the actor 'Ryan Reynolds', is trapped in underground and in our film it is the cellar room that the main character is trapped in. Money is the root of evil in both films, it seems that in this film the main character has been bribed by someone as we see him ringing around frantically trying to persuade the antagonist to release him. In our film the main character has also been threatened that his only escape would be to find the money to get for the antagonist. Both characters were the victims of violence and were assaulted from a hit on the head from a blunt object persumeably.
Iconography such as a mobile phone has been used in the film to show that it is his only source of contact. Because of him only having this one valuable small object to him it is a matter of life and death and because as audience we know that the battery will eventually run out there is a tense atmosphere as to whether he will escape or not. In our film we are planning on using a small lamp or light and not main lighting as it adds to create an eery atmosphere and appears to fit the thriller genre.
A torch is also used in the film as another source of lighting, this is a common piece of iconography in the genre. It implies that they are looking for something and because of the direct light that the torch in shining towards the audience, it means we are unable to see the person who's holding the object which makes the audience uneasy.
A watch is another piece of iconography that is often used in the thriller genre as it shows the audience that the events of the film are against a time scale. Here we know from watching the trailer and seeing objects such as the watch and the battery life on the film that he only has a matter of time to escape. Likewise in our film we are working against time as the main character tries to escape from the room.
Other films such as Saw and Taken 2 shows elements of entrapment. In saw the victim is trapped in a room and has to complete a task in order to continue to the next room, which if he completes along with the rest will be able to escape. In taken 2 Bryan and his wife are kidnapped and taken to a room where there a tied up and left there.
Characters
Characters in thriller films often consist of convicts, criminals, secret agents, assasins, innocent victims (usually on the run or trying to escape something), prison inmates, manaced women, terrorists, cops and escaped convicts. These types of character roles either help build suspense building the hero who manages to escape situations that you wouldnt think would be possible, or the culprit who creates these situations who creates suspense as no one knows what he will do next.
The hero's in thrillers are often men that are exposed to danger in their jobs (i.e spies) or are ordinary people that have accidentally been taken into a dangerous situation accidentally. The hero usually aims to defeat the situation, so for example in our film the main character (hero) is trying to escape from the room in which they are being held captive.
The villains in thriller films are also usually male with a shady sense of background which gives the audience the impression that they should not be trusted. It is possible that they could have had a bad experience which has led to their change of perception on humanity. They usually work alone.
The type of clothing that the characters wear within the genre are generic and typical. Often the characters are well-dressed and if any of the characters are former spies or have worked in organisations such as the CIA they are formally dressed and often carry a briefcase.
